diabetes diet

Question by akivi73: How can I adjust my diet to lessen my risk of diabetes?
I recently learned that both of my parents are close to becoming diabetic. My dad was told he is glucose intolerant or boderline diabetic. My mom had a test come back positive for diabetes prior to her recent surgery to remove her gallbladder and she will take another test for diabetes in a few months. Both of my parents are in their late forties and I am 26, but I want to make changes now so that I don’t have to deal with these issues in the future. I work out fairly regularly, I’m not overweight, and I don’t eat red meat or pork. What else can I do to prevent becoming diabetic?

In addition to exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight, foods rich in vitamin C, unrefined carbohydrates, vitamin E, fiber, magnesium, chromium, monounsaturated fats, and potassium can all positively impact the body’s management of Type 2 diabetes as well as help prevent the onset of the disease in the first place.

Here are a list of good foods:
Broccoli
Red Pepper
Coffee–appears to help prevent adult-onset diabetes
Cinnamon–appears to help the body manage insulin
Whole Wheat
Beans
Oatmeal
Nuts
Apricots
Blueberries
Salmon
Spinach
Strawberries
Blackberries
Raspberries
Cantaloupe
Citrus Fruit
Cranberry Juice
Dark Green Leafy Veggies
Brown Rice
Dried Fruits
Avocados
Apples

What Are My Chances of Developing Type 1 Diabetes?

R0BOT1KK asked:

I am a 16 year old male, the oldest kid in my family. My sister who is 11 was diagnosed with type 1 about a year ago, and my 1st cousin who is 4 years old was diagnosed about a month ago. Obviously this means that the rest of us are at risk for also developing the disease. I was wondering what the chances of me getting it are? also what age does the risk start to decline?

thank you!

SayWha? asked:

I’m doing a paper on diabetes because it runs in my family, and i am reading about how native americans, hispanics and blacks are at a much higher risk to develop the disease than non-hispanic, non native american whites. Yes i realize that certain minority groups may live in poverty, and of course that leaves them with a small grocery budget = cheap unhealthy foods. But that doesn’t mean their ETHNICITY has anything to do with developing diabetes? what the hell?

please tell me your thoughts on this!

type 1 diabetes

Question by rahrah: Is there a way to lower my risk of getting type 1 diabetes?
I know it’s not necessarily hereditary, but my grandma has type 1 diabetes. I’m 17 and know I could still potentially get it in the next few years. I eat pretty healthy and exercise at least an hour a day.

Ignore the above two answers. They are fools.
Diabetes type 1 is an autoimmune disease.
That means nothing can prevent it unfortunately.
Type 2 can be prevented by healthy eating and exercise

Yes you can get type 1 into your forties but not much older usually. Many newly diagnosed type 1′s are in their teens. No you are not born with.
You are born with a high likelyhood of getting it

Question by im not that innocent: What are the best ways to reduce the risk of getting type 1 diabetes?
I’m really scared that I’m going to get type 1 diabetes. I match two of the symtoms of it: extreem hunger and fatigue. Type 1 diabetes runs in my family, my sister, and great grandparents had it.

Answer by snoop3
well, you need to research all the facts of what not taking care of your diabetes can do to you, then share with her with a tone of concern not hostility (you dont sound hostile anyway, so shouldn’t be a problem). If her diabetes worsens, she could possibly be looking at kidney failure leading to dialysis, peripheral neuropathy which causes pain and amputation of legs and feet at times, diabetic coma leading to possible death, high blood pressure, not to mention the sick feelings you get anyway just by your blood sugar being too high, too low. With two children now, I hope your wife realizes how important it is to take care of herself, if not for you and her, for them! best wishes!

As far as I know, diabetes doesn’t run in my family. My dad has high cholesterol, 2 of my aunts and my mom have high blood pressure, another aunt has a thyroid problem, and my dad’s cousin died from pancreatic cancer. Are my chances high? I’ve heard a lot of these link to diabetes, but I’m not sure which one I’m at risk to get if at all.
I forgot to mention I am 19 years old if that helps.
