Autumn Leaves asked:
I read this in a book about diabetes. Some researchers thought the cause of Type 1 was a cold virus that mutated and attacked the pancreas. They also thought there was a link to serious illness around 10/11 years old. At the time of the book’s publication none of this was proven. My dad died from complications of Type 1, he almost died of Scarlet Fever when he was 10 so I’m wondering. Does anybody know?

I recently learned that both of my parents are close to becoming diabetic. My dad was told he is glucose intolerant or boderline diabetic. My mom had a test come back positive for diabetes prior to her recent surgery to remove her gallbladder and she will take another test for diabetes in a few months. Both of my parents are in their late forties and I am 26, but I want to make changes now so that I don’t have to deal with these issues in the future. I work out fairly regularly, I’m not overweight, and I don’t eat red meat or pork. What else can I do to prevent becoming diabetic?

Type 2 diabetes runs in my family, both my grandma and my dad have it. My diet isn’t the best in the first place, but I want to do my best to try and avoid getting diabetes in the future.

As far as I know, diabetes doesn’t run in my family. My dad has high cholesterol, 2 of my aunts and my mom have high blood pressure, another aunt has a thyroid problem, and my dad’s cousin died from pancreatic cancer. Are my chances high? I’ve heard a lot of these link to diabetes, but I’m not sure which one I’m at risk to get if at all.
I forgot to mention I am 19 years old if that helps.

My Dad has diabetes and all he does is sleep in bed all day everyday. He needs help to go to the toilet and changes his mood every second. His eyes always get swollen and he is super thin! I don’t know what food to make for him since he can’t have oil, fat, and fried foods! I don’t know what to do!

My friend wants to know what are her cousins chances of getting diabetes? She is 11, she is pretty skinny, but she eats. A LOT. And hates vegetables. He grandfather and a few people before him had it. It skipped her cousin’s dad and aunt. How could we get her to eat healthier, and what are her chances of getting diabetes?

Anna asked:
I asked my dad if he has type 1 or 2. He said 1. However , he said he wasn’t born with it and only takes medication, and does not need insulin. Isn’t that type 2 diabetes? Also, how long does it take for diabetes to develop? He got it AFTER I was born, so how could I inherit it if he got it after I was born. I don’t think I’ll ever inherit it.He said he is below 300, I don’t know what that means.
He’ s not near 300. Also he got it when he was like 38 years old.
I don’t get how I can inherit it if hegot it after I was born.
