My husband has type 1 diabetes and he’s all of a sudden started getting extremely tired. He can’t get enough sleep and feels the need to sleep through the day.
Does this mean anything bad? Does anyone have the same problems? Please help!

My mum has it and my mums brother (my uncle) My two brothers don’t but they mainly take after my dads side of the family. I take after my mums in character and appearance (if this means anything) My mum was diagnosed when she was 20 odd and my uncle when he was 30 odd both were fairly old to get type 1 Diabetes. I’m 13, 14 soon. Is there a high chance i will get type 1 Diabetes? Thanks in advance. x

For managing diabetes, nutritional supplements may be very important. Even with proper diet and regular exercise, it is difficult for even very healthy people to get excellent nutrition without dietary supplements. For those who suffer from diabetes, supplements are even more important. There are even specific supplements that have been shown in laboratory tests to help stabilize blood glucose levels. Some of these dietary supplements for diabetes are enzymes that aid digestion or improve glucose metabolism. Others are minerals such as calcium, magnesium and chromium, which are often lacking in the diet. And, still others are herbs or botanicals.

Herbs and botanicals have long been used by native peoples to treat various diseases and conditions. Sometimes these remedies are quite effective. They may be somewhat controversial and should not be expected to take the place of modern drugs, but they can “complement” modern medical treatments. In some cases, people who begin taking herbal remedies are able to reduce their medications, with their doctor’s advice, of course. Herbs and botanicals are included in some supplements for diabetes because they were used historically to treat the condition and because modern evaluation has shown that they may be helpful for managing the condition, today.

Banaba is found in some of the better diabetes supplements. It is a plant that is native to Southern Asia and has a history of traditional use to help people control their blood sugar levels. Laboratory research has shown that adding banaba leaves to the diet of diabetic mice lowers their blood glucose levels and seems to contribute to weight loss in obese mice. Studies in 1999 and 2001 concluded that banaba extract could help control blood sugar levels and possibly assist with weight loss. The researchers suggested that clinical trials, which involve “real” people, were in order. But clinical trials are quite expensive and most are sponsored by drug companies. Most drug companies have no interest in a naturally occurring substance like banaba extract, because it cannot be patented. So clinical trials have never been initiated, but banaba extract is found in some nutritional supplements for diabetes.

Bitter Melon is another plant that has shown promise in the laboratory. Bitter melon tea is still used in the Philippines today, particularly among the poor, to help control blood sugar levels. In Ayurvedic medicine, practiced widely throughout India and other countries, it is recommended as one of the diabetes nutritional supplements and as a complement to other forms of treatment. Blood sugar levels should be closely monitored when using diabetes nutritional supplements that contain bitter melon, in order to avoid an unsafe drop in blood sugar.

Black seed or nigella sativa extract is considered a cure all in some countries. Modern research concerning black seed extract in the treatment of diabetes is preliminary. But, thus far the research indicates that it can lower elevated blood sugar levels and increase antioxidant activity, possibly preventing the complications associated with uncontrolled type II diabetes. First time you’ve traveled by air since you were diagnosed with diabetes? Here are the basics every insulin-dependent diabetic needs to know before air travel.

Insulin-dependent diabetics should carry their insulin in a thermos in hand baggage on the plane. Diabetic travelers departing the United States and most other problems seldom have a problem with security inspections and are allowed to bring both insulin and syringes on board, but some airports in Europe have confiscated syringes from travelers not carrying a doctor’s prescription. In a pinch, you can probably explain that the labels your pharmacy put on the boxes your insulin came in are the same as a prescription. Diabetic travelers should also carry their glucometers so they will know for sure whether blood sugars are high, low, or normal, and every diabetic should carry glucose tablets or snacks at all times.

Generally speaking, it’s better to have blood sugars a little high than a little low when on board the plane. If you take “slow” insulin once a day, adjust the time of day you take your shot at your destination to match the time you take it at home. For instance, if you take slow insulin at 6 p.m. at home and you fly six time zones west, take your slow insulin six hours earlier (noon) while you’re on your trip. If you fly east, take your insulin later (although it’s usually OK to be late or early an hour on two). For instance, if you fly from Chicago to Moscow (nine hours east) and you usually take your slow insulin a 6 p.m., the ideal time to inject would be 3 in the morning. In those cases, early morning will probably be OK.

All diabetics need to carry diabetic identification at all times, whether a bracelet, necklace, or wallet card. Bracelets and necklaces are more likely to checked by emergency personnel. A wallet card is likely to be checked only if there has been an extreme emergency.

And if you live in a temperate or tropical climate and you are traveling to a more polar climate, get ready for unusual fluctuations in your insulin needs. Many adult diabetics with LADA or type II diabetes have some insulin production in their own bodies. Longer nights, for reasons scientists are just beginning to understand, sometimes increase that insulin production. If you live in Miami and you fly off to Norway, you may find that your sugars are lower than you would expect. Be sure to test your blood sugars even on the busiest travel days. You may enjoy your trip a whole lot more if you do.

However, people with diabetes may find it extremely difficult to change their food patterns and control their calorie intake. This is because they have to strike a delicate balance in their food intake. Too many calories and they will put on weight, too little and they can easily slip into hypoglycemia. So, the diabetic diet must have all the required nutrients that the patient needs, in the right proportion. At the same time, it must also cut enough calories to help the diabetic patient lose enough weight.

One of the best ways in which people with diabetes can control their weight, eat in a healthy manner and still lose weight is by increasing their fiber intake. Vegetable and fruits are the best sources of natural dietary fibers. So, people with diabetes are often advised to take in plenty of fresh vegetables. However, diabetics cannot take in high amounts of fruits because fruits contain fructose, which in turn gets converted into glucose in the blood. Thus, diabetic patients cannot get their full supply of fiber from food alone.
