A J asked:
Would being diabetic have an effect on me becoming a firefighter? I just got accepted to do the interview process and then I have a medical test examination. If they find out that I have diabetes would that effect anything. I have had diabetes for about 1 year now. I am not overweight and young (26) so its a hereditary thing. Thanks.

That’s a tough question. I have a friend who’s tried to get onto firefighting in my town, but don’t know if that’s a problem.
You can see it both ways. OF course, it could be dangerous if you suddenly have an attack and then could endanger others by your LACK of ability to function.
But also, it may not be a dangerous enough problem to be a danger, because it is so well known of and treatment is regular, if you need insulin. Otherwise, my best friend is “pre-diabetic” and has been handling his with merely diet change. And he’s improved over past few years to where he can go without food allday and not be affected by fainting or dizziness like he used to.
Just depends on what they consider to be a danger for illnesses. Obviously if you had a touch of rheumatoid arthritis, I’m sure you’d be canned quite easily.
But I wouldn’t sweat it. Don’t worry about it.
If they do make an issue of it, another related field you could become is an EMT—emergency medical transport. You’d still be saving lives, but just in a different area.
You need to be realistic about what you can do.
My uncle is a firefighter, and it’s such a hard job.
He has been without eating for 12/15 hours because of call out after call out. You can’t ask people to wait, or just skip this one if your sugar is low.
Can you survive 12 hourse of intense physical activity with little food? The reality of the job is you might have to some days.
Ask your cheif about it, and be honest. Because god help you if you lie and have a hypo.
Would you want to work in that enviroment with people who can;t be trusted?
Be honest about your diabetes, and what you can and can’t do.
No matter how much you want to do it, peoples lives depend on you, and would you ever forgive yourself if something happened?
Good luck.
Actually the diabetes will give some effects if u wanna be a firefighter.
