Grace asked:
My husband just made E7 and he has been in the army for 8 years. He was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago and they let him stay in but, now they are now sending him back. I was wondering if they will just put him out, give him severance pay, or medically retire him.

My old boss’s son in law was discharged from the Air Force for the same thing. The doctor said that a lot of military that deploy and get a certain shot turn out to have diabetes. I’m not sure if it’s true or not.
He got a severence package that covered them long enough to be able to move to Utah in a small apt. pay some of his medical bills. Then her daughter had to get a job because the money started running out. He was in for 14 yrs. They wouldn’t even let him take a non deployable job. And yes there are some in the Air Force no matter who says there aren’t.
That depends,
If they say the diabetes was caused by military service
Which I do not see how they will say that.
He could be medically retired.
But I bet they will say it is not service connected, and he will just be medically separated as unfit to serve.
IE: no continuing medical benefits.
And he may or may not receive severance pay.
Basically, he will probally be treated, like someone who was injured in a car accident off duty , who could no longer serve.
As to why they let him stay 3 years ago, they might have thought that with proper exercise and life style changes ( eating right ) he could control his diabetes without medication.
But have now determined, that he cannot control it or will not control it without medication.
I don’t necessary have the correct answer for you. I would say it depends on if he is taking pills or insulin. They might allow him to stay if he is taking pills but if his diabetes has to be controlled by insulin they will medically discharge him. Note I have a VA disability for diabetes and it is 20% but I only take pills.
