Your doctor should have given you a list of things to avoid eating or drinking so that you can keep your sugar levels lower and under control. Have you been referred to a dietitian yet? He or she can discuss all this with you.
.
If you have gestational diabetes it is very important that you follow your doctor’s instructions and see any specialists that you are referred to. Gestational diabetes does not just pose health risks for you, but for your baby as well.
.
Till then…to help keep your sugar levels down you should avoid drinking fruit juices and sugarary soft drinks. You will need to drink milk… unless your doctor wants you to take calcium pills instead…just remember that milk has a natural sugar in it so you must not drink a large amount of milk at any one time or with foods high in sugar like cookies or fruit.
.
Eat fruit (any kind that you like and that agrees with your system) instead of drinking fruit juices and do not eat a whole piece of a large fruit (like an apple, orange, banana, pear, etc.) when you do eat fruit. For example, only eat half a banana for breakfast and then eat the another half for lunch. This way you will space out the amount of fruit sugar going into your blood during the day.
It is important to continue to eat a well-balanced diet while you are pregnant, just try not to over load your system at any one time during the day. You will feel much better if your sugar levels stays fairly even.
.
Try doing this…
Instead of eating your three regular meals and an evening snack each day, try eating six “half-meals” and a bedtime snack each day instead. For example:
Instead of eating an egg, toast, half piece of fruit, and glass of milk for breakfast…have an egg and fruit, say at 8 AM then wait two hours before you have your toast (no jelly) and milk, say at 10 AM. Same with lunch, split your lunch in half, eating the 1st half at noon and the second half as a mid-afternoon snack at 2 or 3. Then do the same for supper. Just remember NOT to eat and drink things together that tend to raise your blood sugar quickly…for example, don’t have fruit & milk together. Eating these smaller meals now will also be more comfortable for you during these last months of your pregnancy.
.
I have been a diabetic for over 20 years now and I can tell you that the trick to keeping your sugar levels under control is to watch the amount of food you eat and to space your sugar in-take out during the day. If you want something sweet like a candy bar…don’t sit down and eat a whole candy bar at once. Just cut off a bite, eat the bite and then put the rest in a baggy and save it for a bite the next day. If you eat too much sugar at one time you will just end up feeling terrible so if you remember that… it won’t be too hard to only take one bite.
.
There are many medical sites on-line that can advise you about your gestational diabetes until your next doctor appointment, but please talk with your family doctor about any concerns… you should be seeing your doctor more often now that you have developed diabetes. I can not stress too much how important it is for you to see your doctor often now and to work closely with your doctor. My daughter-in-law had gestational diabetes with her last pregnancy and had a beautiful healthy baby. BUT she worked very closely with her doctors and followed all their instructions.
BTW, the gestational diabetes will go away after your baby is born, just give it a month or so.
Dried fruits are great snacks, just remember that one dried prune (my personal favorite) can have even more sugar in it than a whole fresh plum.
Best of luck with your baby!
