In a nutshell, type I diabetes is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the beta cells of the pancreas stop producing insulin. Type II diabetes comes from insulin resistance and is usually seen in older, overweight patients whose pancreas is working. Type II diabetes is preventable through proper diet and lifestyle, but type I is not preventable at this time. Maybe we will learn more in time so that type I diabetes can be prevented as well.
In the most simplistic of terms…Type 1 diabetics don’t produce their own insulin. Type 2 diabetics may not produce any or enough insulin, or the body doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do with it.
PS. Type 2 diabetics may also take insulin, and not everyone who has it ate too much sugar. I’m a Type 2 who takes insulin, and my mother was a Type 2 who never weighed over 100 pounds in her entire 78 years.
Also, type 1 diabetes is typically found in patients 30 and younger. It was also known as Juvenile Diabetes.
