What Are the Chances My Newborn Son Will Have Diabetes if My Husband Is Type 2?

My husband is 31 years old. He got type 2 diabetes 4 years ago. We now have a newborn and I’m nervous he will get diabetes in his life as well. Anyone know the risks? Thank you!
PS – I am not diabetic and did not have gestational diabetes either. My son was born full term and of healthy weight and size.

There is a predisposition to type 2 diabetes, but there also a life style component. You have many good answers on here. You also might want to check out the American Diabetes Asso. website. There is much good information on there. There are other websites as well. Of course, you will also want to ask your child’s pediatrician what you can do to limit the risks. Your concern and education will help give them a healthy future. Take care.
Having a parent with Type 2 diabetes does predispose your child to the disease, but there are many other factors. I hope this website will help you:

diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which could be get by wrong diet ,too much stress but most of all it is genetically acquired one .
Having a newborn means you have a really great opportunity here to teach your son good healthy habits right from birth that can prevent him from developing Type 2 Diabetes, even if he is genetically predisposed.
If you can get your son right from the start on a healthy balanced diet (look up the recommendations on the American Diatetic or American Diabetic Associations website of what a healthy diet looks like for a normal, healthy person), you can stop bad habits before they start.
Also, encourage healthy excercise and activity from an early age.
I have Type 1 Diabetes, and I am 8 months pregnant, and I am going to do this too. We don’t have snack food or soda in the house, we eat alot of protein and vegetables at meals with a healthy portion of carbs, and we aren’t going to give our baby fruit juice or sweetened baby food, so hopefully our child will learn how to eat a balanced diet and not develop a taste for sweets.
Good Luck!
If you feed your child proper, there’s a very good chance he will never develop diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is not hereditary, it is irrelevant that your husband has it.
