I am 25 with No family history of diabetes. only one blood relative a cousin (1 cousin outta 67 cousins) with diabetes and he is 18 and just got it last year. I was just diagnosed 5 weeks ago. after winding up in the hospital close to a diabetic coma, i thought i just had the flu. So basically what I'm gettin at is they say you have a higher risk but from what my endo tells me it has about the same chance to happen to anyone. Well i would think that you have the same chance as most. It cannot be 'stalled' or 'stopped' by diet. When you get a virus, your body confuses the virus with your beta-cells that make insulin. It attacks and kills them, leaving you with absolutely no ability to make insulin. Ther is a tiny (0.5%) higher than normal chance of you getting it because your mother is diabetic, but don't worry. The chances are extremely, extremely slim. Type 1 is an auto immuine disease. It cannot be ‘stalled’ or ‘stopped’ by diet.

BUT, that does not mean you definitely will! In my family there is NO history of it anywhere--and my brother has it. So you never know.
