tornadolover asked:
My mum has it and my mums brother (my uncle) My two brothers don’t but they mainly take after my dads side of the family. I take after my mums in character and appearance (if this means anything) My mum was diagnosed when she was 20 odd and my uncle when he was 30 odd both were fairly old to get type 1 Diabetes. I’m 13, 14 soon. Is there a high chance i will get type 1 Diabetes? Thanks in advance. x

Its a possibility certainly, but impossible to tell in advance. So for the moment try not to worry about it, and get regular check ups with your doctor.
You have a slightly higher chance of developing type 1 diabetes because you mom has it.
It has a genetic component, so you do have a predisposition for it.
BUT, that does not mean you definitely will!
In my family there is NO history of it anywhere–and my brother has it. So you never know.
I would be knowledgeable about it and have yearly bloodwork done to check your sugars, etc.
Good luck.
There is a CHANCE, yes, but what is more important is that you start NOW to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with a proper diet, increased exercise, and maintaining a normal weight. these will go a LONG way towards stalling or stopping diabetes.
Type 1 is an auto immuine disease. It cannot be ’stalled’ or ’stopped’ by diet.
When you get a virus, your body confuses the virus with your beta-cells that make insulin.
It attacks and kills them, leaving you with absolutely no ability to make insulin.
Ther is a tiny (0.5%) higher than normal chance of you getting it because your mother is diabetic, but don’t worry.
The chances are extremely, extremely slim.
Well i would think that you have the same chance as most. I am 25 with No family history of diabetes. only one blood relative a cousin (1 cousin outta 67 cousins) with diabetes and he is 18 and just got it last year. I was just diagnosed 5 weeks ago. after winding up in the hospital close to a diabetic coma, i thought i just had the flu. So basically what I’m gettin at is they say you have a higher risk but from what my endo tells me it has about the same chance to happen to anyone.
