I’m really scared that I’m going to get type 1 diabetes. I match two of the symtoms of it: extreem hunger and fatigue. Type 1 diabetes runs in my family, my sister, and great grandparents had it.

My husband is a type 1 diabetic, and we have a son with another son on the way. In the course of my current pregnancy one test came back a little abnormal so we were referred to a genetics counselor. My husband and his niece are type 1…the chance of it occuring in our children is 3-5%. I wouldn’t worry yourself too much. I would watch your weight, and make sure you are active, but please dont fret overit. 3-5% is relatively small chance. Good luck!

Usually type 1 presents itself with extreme thirst and weightloss. The hunger and fatigue (and the other symptoms) can be related to other less serious things.
Type I diabetes is not really avoidable in most cases. It’s usually caused by a virus hitting the body and the immune system is not strong enough to fight off. Some people are more prone to get Type I and I think if you eat healthy, take vitamins (multi), and stay in shape you may reduce your chances. I’ve had it 22 years.
By the way are you urinating alot and is it darker than normal with a foul odor. May be a bad sign.
Fatigue is a common symptom, as are extreme thirst and frequent urination. Hunger is an uncommon symptom. Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do to prevent the onset of Type 1…we don’t even know what causes it yet. If you’re concerned, buy an inexpensive blood glucose meter at the drugstore – the One Touch Ultra Mini is only about $15. Test your blood glucose on two different mornings – first thing in the morning before eating or any activity. If both numbers are over 100, see your doctor for further testing.
If it runs in your family, you should probably go and get tested for it.
Other symptoms that I experienced include frequent thirst, frequent bathroom visits-like every hour and you feel like you can’t hold it if you want to-, and vomiting after a high carb and high sugar meal-such as a chocolate shake and McDonald’s for me-, and extreme weight loss.
You can go to your doctor so they can check your urine, no blood drawn. Please, don’t wait. DIabetes is very serious but don’t be scared, your doctors can offer all kinds of support.
