scooby asked:
My friend has just found out she has type 2 diabetes, she is 60 years old and is really struggling with what what to eat and what not to eat. She has all of the literature from the docs but this isnt really helping on meal ideas. Does anyone know of any good websites that give recipe ideas or a book that I could buy her. As she is a pensioner she doesn’t have a lot of money for fancy foods so simple suggestions please. Thanks for your answers.

I would look into the mayo clinic’s books, and I want to say it is called that National Diabetic Clearing house, there is a phone # that you can call and they will send you a free set of booklets on all aspects of diabetes. Also, webmd.com has some pretty good resources, shoot me an e-mail if you would like and I can give you a ton more resources.
Check out these websites – give a lot of information as well as a choice of recipes
Okay, first of all, i hope your friend is doing alright. A few people i know have type 2 diabetes. I suggest having her NOT eat simple carbs, like rice and pasta. I’m not an expert, but that’s what the people that i know do.

SHILAJIT OR ASPHALTUM : Shilajit has long been used for the prevention and treatment of diabeties in Ayervedic medicine. Shilajit counteracts Diabetes and regulates the blood sugar level.
GYMNEMA SYLVESTRE : Gymnema assists the pancreas in the production of insulin in Type 2 diabetes. Gymnema also improves the ability of insulin to lower blood sugar in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This herb can be an excellent substitute for oral blood sugar-lowering drugs in Type 2 diabetes. Some people take 500 mg per day of gymnema extract.
FENUGREEK SEEDS : In two small studies of individuals with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, fenugreek seed powder lowered blood glucose and improved levels of blood cholesterol and trigylcerides, among other beneficial effects. The active ingredient responsible for the antidiabetic properties of fenugreek is in the defatted portion of the seed that contains the alkaloid trogonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin.
ONION & GARLIC : Onion and garlic have significant blood sugar lowering action. The principal active ingredients are believed to be allyl propyl disulphide (APDS) and diallyl disulphide oxide (allicin), although other constitutents such as flavonoids may play a role as well. Onion extract was found to reduce blood sugar levels during oral and intravenous glucose tolerance. The effect improved as the dosage was increased; however, beneficial effects were observed even for low levels that used in the diet (eg., 25 to 200 grams). The effects were similar in both raw and boiled onion extracts.
It is very important to control stress. Avoid fatigue, and emotional upsets. Stresses create anxiety that send damaging hormones racing through your system. Exercise can be used to control stress. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent diabetes and controlling blood sugar levels.

They have an excellent book called, The Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter. It is only 7.99 and has every food you can think of listed with all the info you need. They have all the fast food menus, frozen food, etc. by brand name. Also has some helpful guides and info for diabetics. It’s a great book. My husband got his book free from the dietitian through Medtronic. You might see if they have a website too.

There are a lot of diabetes diet recipes on the internet and at the library also.
I know how she feels. I was just diagnosed last Tuesday myself and it is a very hard thing to deal w/@ first let along deal w/what you have to eat. I can tell you this site really helped me out and it is not fancy stuff. The stuff is things you might already have around the house. Alot of what she will need to eat will definitely be fruits, vegetables, whole grain. I was told I had to be on med last Tuesday when it all happened and as of last Friday I was able to get my sugar down w/o med!!. I’m eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I hope she can tolerate those because that will be a big impact on her sugar level. Good luck!!
Pudding:
Blend 2 packages of sugar-free pudding, 4-cups water (not milk), and 2 low-carb (around 4 grams) vanilla yogurt. Pour into 1/2 cup containers for portion control.
Mix can also be used for frozen pops.
