I have gestational diabetes and I’m worried that the minute that my fiance cuts the cord they’re going to take my baby to the NICU. Everything that I’ve heard keeps saying that they take the baby away from you and I don’t want them too and I don’t think I will let them. So can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

Not true. Unless the baby is in distress, they won’t take him to the NICU.
Nope they can ***** the bottom of the baby’s foot and test the levels right there and even give them sugar water or formula right there in the same room as you
I had GD with my second son but both my boys had low levels at birth and they didn’t take either one away to the NICU and they were even born 4 weeks early.
I don’t think they’ll do that if there is nothing wrong with the baby. If he/she comes out crying and with a good apgar score there is no reason for them to take the baby to the NICU. They may need to do other tests on the baby that’s not normally done though.
AND…if there is a need for the NICU you don’t really have a choice. IF there is something wrong with the baby they aren’t going to ask you if its ok to bring the baby in for immediate medical attention.
That cannot be the farthest from the truth. for one, they only take the baby away from you to run ttests and make sure he/she is healthy. the nurses WANT the baby to be with you!
As for a baby going to the NICU if the mom has GD, no that is not true either. The baby will be thoroughly examined like all other babies, and will possibly have its blood sugars tested. but as long as the baby is doing what newborns should do, the baby will be with you!
I had GD and when my daughter was born I held her and nursed her for about 5 minutes and then they took her along with my husband to check her blood sugar and give her a good bathing. During that time I was busy having my stomach pushed down on really hard to get out the excess fluid (NOT pleasant…they never tell you about that in birthing class) and having my tear down there stitched. I’m glad my daughter was not in the room to hear me swearing at the doctor!
When I got in to recovery they brought her back to me. It wasn’t that big of a deal.
Absolutely NOT TRUE!!! I had gestational diabetes and my son was FINE!!! Perfect even!
He only weighed 7lbs 5oz.! About a week prior to the day I was to be induced, he was estimated to be 7 1/2 pounds…they said he would probably gain about a pound from there and that they could be off either way by a 1/2 pound…so they were pretty accurate about that. Anyway, when he was born the put him on my chest just like a “normal” person!
Of course, if there is something wrong with your baby’s blood sugar, they might have to give him glucose or something, but they won’t rush him off to the NICU!!
DON’T WORRY SWEETIE!!!!
