Softy asked:
I am very nervous to tell my mom that I want to get tested for diabetes on a regular basis because, the pediatrician that we see said that I can’t get diabetes as a child even though it runs in the family. I know that is not true. So how should I tell her and when is a good time to tell her. The other reason I am nervous is because she is a paramedic which means she takes care of people on the way to the hospital in an ambulance.
the reason i want to get tested is cause it runs in the family

In order to get tested you will need your doctor to write an order for the lab work. You could ask your mom to get a blood glucose monitor instead. You can purchase the monitor and supplies at your pharmacy and keep a record of your blood sugar weekly, if you notice it is too high or too low for long periods of time then make an appointment with your doctor. Keep a journal of all of your readings and take it to your doctor.
I would not worry about getting diabetes just because it runs in the family. You can watch for the symptoms. If you are overweight your doctor can do a fasting blood sugar result to see if you might be in trouble of getting Type 2 diabetes. If you drink constantly and I mean are CONSTANTLY drinking and craving sugary foods or have recently started losing lots of weight then I am sure your Mom would see a problem and you shouldn’t worry that she won’t take you to get tested. She’s a Mom and one who works in healthcare!! And your peditrician is sooo wrong to say that to you. Nobody knows what causes type 1 diabetes. True it mostly skips generations and my brothers don’t have it. My child doesn’t either. But she carries the gene for it and a geneticist told me she only has a one percent of one percent to get type 1. type 2 runs in both families so she stands a great risk of getting that if she doesn’t take care of herself (or if I dont show her how to not be healthy since she’s only 8:} )
Ask her to get you a glucose meter. You can test yourself. You can learn about blood sugar and help your friends.
Because you r mother is a paramedic she would see if you had symptoms. Doctors will not run tests just because you want them. There needs to be a reason to do it. You would have to have sypmtoms before the doctor would request the blood be drawn and tested. The tests aren’t free and your mother’s health insurance won’t pay for blood tests just because you want them.
You’re being a little bit paranoid about this. Eat healthy, live healthy and move on. Trust that your mom will notice if you have something wrong like diabetes, it’s hard to miss when it starts its course.
You’ve asked this question in the past. I think you are obsessing over this.
Also, some people have advised that you get a glucose meter and test yourself. That is a terrible idea. Testing for diabetes is not a do-it-yourself project. The number you get will depend greatly on what you ate and when you ate and if there was a lot of fat and lots of other stuff.
Speak to your mom about your concerns and trust that she knows what she is talking about.
It’s good to get tested regularly if you are worried because that way, you can catch the symptoms early and the doctors can see if you are a prime candidate for diabetes and have you put on the necessary precautionary measures. Prevention is way better than cure, and there is currently no cure for diabetes.
Diabetes Type I need only a trigger like bacterial or virus infection, or a result from uncontrolled Type II if you are currently suffering from it but do not know you have it and ignoring the symptoms.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having you tested for diabetes regularly and I am pretty sure your mother will understand it perfectly. She would NOT want you to end up really having the condition because it can be such a debilitating disease if you are not careful.
dont be nervou theres nothing to be ashamed of.
i would reccomend checking out
so that you know the symptoms of diabetes just incase you experience them in the future.
best of luck
