I also have type one diabetes, and sometimes feel that no one is putting out enough effort to support us. You could hold walks, lemonade stands, yard sales anything to help with stem cell research.
Diabetes medications and supplies are covered by most, if not all, insurance plans. If you don’t have insurance then you can get assistance with your insulin through prescription assistance programs. I have provided the link.
I have been type 1 for 15 years. I get a 3 month supply of Humalog free and a 3 month supply of Lantus for $7.00. I get 50 test strips for $21.00, and I’ve gotten many free meters throughout the past 15 years. Your doctor may be able to give you one. Ask.
It is scary, but you will be ok.

since you are diabetic, if your family does not have insurance you can look into medicare/medicaid even though your not a senior. They cover diabetics of any age, however they do have a lot of problems with their coverage and what they will or will not pay for. Otherwise Insurance company’s do cover diabetes supplies.
There are some free clinics that will help you with equipment and supplies. Some of the drug companies will too. The doctor’s office may have samples or ideas about where to get stuff. Leave no stone unturned.
Try the local chapter of the American Diabetes Association for advice or help. You might also get in touch with local hospitals or clinics that are conducting diabetes studies. It’s no fun being a guinea pig sometimes but these studies will usually pay for your test strips for the length of a study, or pay for A1C tests. You didn’t say whether you were insured or not but depending on what state you live in there may be a basic health insurance pool that you can qualify for. Meter companies will send out free meters for the asking, because they make their money from the strips. So don’t get suckered into buying a meter. And you can reuse the lancet for weeks and weeks. Skip the alcohol preps for injections – an extra expense. You don’t want to reuse a needle more than a few times or for more than 24 hours, but that will shave some costs.
