Cut way back on processed food and carbs. Sugar is killing us
I just got diagnosed with this type of diabetes three weeks ago. I have heard completely contradictory information that whole grains and using the AMA food pyramid helps, and then the opposite, a total high protein low carb is the way to go. I can’t seem to work the 5 or 6 smalls meals into my work schedule. Thanks for asking this question and I’ll be watching everyone’s answers.
A balanced diet and exercise. That is the best thing you can do to prevent diabetes. Also, get your blood sugar checked at least annually by your doctor.
We can prevent it by eating certain foods in moderation. These foods include the super-sugary ones everyone knows about: cake, cookies, candy, ice cream, etc… but also includes refined starches which have a higher glycemic index than the above mentioned simple sugars. These starches include: White rice, white bread, boxed mashed potatoes, etc… Healthier alternatives are brown rice, whole grain bread, and sweet potatoes (yes, yams are healthier than the the more common gray potato)
But I’d like to reiterate a word in my first sentence: Moderation. We can eat anything we want so long as it balances out at the end of the day or week. If you’ve had a salad, a couple oz of meat, some veggies, and a glass of water or possibly juice, a Little Debbie cake is not bad at all.
If you’re eating 3-4 Little Debbie cakes a day, in leiu of veggies and fruits, Type 2 diabetes is just a little more likely to head your way…
watch your diet, exercise, drink plenty of fluids, especially water. You could eat any food, just is moderations.
You need balanced diet and exercise both along with some medicines. Like Metformine / Pioglitazone or both combined. Go and tell your doctor.
It would be better if your drug also contains Cromium Picolinate because it improves insulin resistance in type 2 DM.
I am diabetic type 2. I take measured food, plenty of fruits, no or very little sugar and walk about 3 kms every morning. By God’s grace my sugar level is OK. I get my blood sugar checked up (Fasting PP) every month and am keeping a chrt of the readings.
There are ways to prevent diabetes if there is the genetic proneness.
Dietary approach must include:
TOTAL CALORIES
To satisfy total caloric need without exceeding it
SOURCES OF CALORIES
To have a correct distribution of carbs, fat, and protein
To choose whole grains instead of refined ones
To choose complex carbs and starch rather than simple carbs and table sugar.
To eat non-saturated fats (vegetal origin) instead of saturated ones.

As you probably know heredity, plays a big roll.
For diet, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, Stay away from the white stuff, white bread, potato’s, sugar, white rice etc. Eat as little processed food as possible . All carbs are not created equal a white potato and a sweet potato have the same carbs but metabolize differently, check out the Glycemic Index on foods it will give you more info. Exercise, weight is a big part of it also. If it runs in your family, I don’t know if you can prevent it, but maybe you can delay it. The closer to nature the food is the better. Read labels and don’t go by net carbs unless your on Adkins. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! I hope this helps.
