Have You Ever LOST Pounds While Pregnant on a Gestational Diabetes Diet?

Question by jaemers24: Have you ever LOST pounds while pregnant on a gestational diabetes diet?
I just want to know if controlling my blood sugar and caloric intakeand not gaining weight while pregnant is still ok for my baby?
I am looking for personal experiences here, I’ve had three kids and this is my first case of diabetes-so please refrain from “ask your doctor” responses, I already know what my doc has to say.

I had it with my first baby and I only gained three pounds the whole last trimester. Everything was fine. She came two weeks early and weighed 6 lbs, 5 oz, so if she’d gone to term she’d have been right around 7. I lost all my pregnancy weight within 10 days, which was great. I was nursing and starving all the time and ate all the time, but it all worked out great. BTW, I REALLY stuck to the diet because I was so worried about a C-section. Good luck!

well i have never had gestational diabeties but I am 35 weeks pregnant with type 1 diabeties which is some what the same, i’ve had a really hard time with my diabeties and pregnancy, andi know that if your glucose levels are high then yes it is highly possible to lose weight even if your pregnant, high sugar levels during pregnancy is a problem because it causes the baby to be larger then what is should be also you may get more fluid around the baby causing ur uterus to grow larger, and you may go into pre-term labor or your water may break eailer because of the excess fluid so really no its not ok that your loosing or not putting any weight on during your pregnancy if you have gestational diabeties because typically it means that your glucose levels are more than likely high and high levels can cause complications
i did not lose weight , with my 2 baby i only gain 10 lbs to hole time i was pregnant.
I didn’t have diabetes, but with all 3 of my pregnancies I lost 5 to 15 pounds in the first trimester. I wasn’t eating any differently, its just what my body did. They all came out perfectly fine (except for 1 that was in there too long). I’d say that as long as you are taking your vitamins and eating a healthy mix of foods, that a diet change wouldn’t hurt you. Just make sure you are eating enough calories for the both of you. If your hair starts looking dull or your fingernails stop growing, you need to up your nutrients. I was told by my doctors when I did the funky losing weight in the first trimester, that my baby will pull everything it needs from my food and I’ll get what is left over. So if you start looking sickly, you need more in your diet. Otherwise, just take care of yourself!
If you were not at your healthiest weight when you got pregnant…it is normal to lose some weight or not gain some weight during your pregnancy. With a gestational diabetic diet, you might lose weight just because it is the healthiest diet you can be on while you are pregnant. In general, controlled diabetics who follow their meal plans are eating how the normal population should eat.
I had my son 2 1/2 years ago and I am a type 1 diabetic and was for 1 year before we conceived our son. I was a little lower than healthy weight when I conceived and was aloud to gain a little more but I was told that if I wasn’t at my healthy weight they would have concern of weight gain or consistent weight loss.
I think typically women who are happy about their pregnancy (gestational or not) may lose weight just because they are eating healthier for their baby.
I wouldn’t be concerned unless the ultra-sounds are showing a baby who is significantly underweight or underdeveloped. I imagine you will be seeing a Perintologist soon or already have and they are the key in detecting possible problems for your baby.
Just stick to your diet plan; gaining 15 lbs during your whole pregnancy is healthy, for someone who is at a healthy weight. And remember that doctors are crazy about avoiding malpractice suits, and if you don’t like your doctor find another.
Good luck and congratulations!
I had it with my first baby and it is fine. The sugar seems to go to the baby. I only gain the weight of the baby. I am pregnant now and I have started eating as if I had it again and I took the one hour test with things negative. When your pregnant you only need 300 extra calories a day and if you that in healthy food you would be fine!!! Good Luck!!!
I lost weight until my third trimester and I was on the same diet. My baby was born 7 lbs, 4 oz and she’s healthy & gorgeous!!
She’s now 6 months old and the happiest baby I’ve ever seen.
Not all women gain weight.
