I would really appreciate some help here.My dad has type 2 non insulin dependent diabetes. He tries to keep the level of sugar in his blood within normal levels by monitoring his diet. He has been telling me recently that he feels there is a connection between his mood and the level of glucose in blood. Sounds funny but the way he explains it is that even when he abuses with his diet a little he doesnt notice very big changes in glucose levels but sometimes hes maintained a strict diet and his level of blood glucose rises a lot because HE SAYS IS COS HES NERVOUS, STRESSED, NOT IN A GOOD MOOD etc…so he claims that somehow if hes not in a good mood this will influence his blood glucose levels. Can this possibly be true? Anyone can enlighten me here? Or is that just his impression? thanks in advance

There might be one or both of two things happening. First, blood glucose levels definitely affect moods. Most people feel lethargic and blah when their BG is high, and confused and irritable when their BG is low. But these mood swings generally occur right when the BG is off, it doesn’t continue long after BG returns to normal. If you find that he is not in a good mood at various times of day, he might have anxiety and/or depression, which is quite common in people with diabetes. His doc can prescribe him an antidepressant if he thinks it’s warranted – I take one myself.
Oh my god, there are sooooo many connections between blood glucose levels and mood; i know from experience.
If you abuse your diet or just misjudge the balance between diet / time / exercise you can have dramatic mood swings.
See the doc and get the right info.
