asktheholisticdoctor asked:
Diabetes 2 can be controlled with diet. Dr. David Dahlman discusses a proper diabetes diet and contrasts it with the inaccurate dietary information recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

dr. john briffa a great doctor here in the UK well respected and widely published here- totally agrees with you! as do i, as i have reduced my carbs and not only do my glucose readings come down but my cholesterol readings have also reduced, and fat and meat keeps me satiated longer and i eat less- win win
I am not biased, I have not b been presented with compelling evidence that a vegan diet is better, but numerous times I have read that vegan diets are dangerous for all but the most well-informed dieters. It seems an unnecessary change in diet motivated by sympathy for animals, not a desire to be more healthy. More a reconciliation of your diet with your moral leanings.
It is not the vegan diet that improves health, it is more the infrequency of saturated fats found in plants. If you have to find meat/dairy substitutes, you clearly needed the meat and dairy to begin with. There is nothing inherently better about a vegan diet. You talk about strong and weak evidence, but provide neither.
Ridicule is not a tool for arguing. YOU made the claim. You have the burden of proof. Until you provide evidence, your claims are meaningless.
Vegan diets in themselves are not healthy. They require irregular eating habits and protein supplements. Meats and dairy are high in fat, yes, but changing to a vegan diet simply means you have to get your fat and protein elsewhere, and abusing the meant/dairy substitutes instead of abusing the actual meat ans dairy is not healthy.
Yes I might have pulled it from nowhere.
Here is the serious talk: I debate scientific research all the time. Most of the strong evidence indicates the value of vegan diet for health. Some small and weak evidence shows the opposite. Why did you choose the weak evidence? Because you are biased. If I debate you intelligently that means there are some merits to your argument. I will treat you like I treat tobacco scientists and promoters (i.e. with ridicule)
Why did you think I was a frat boy? Seriously. You pulled that one outta nowhere.
Frat boy is…so far off the mark. “Creditability” is not a word. I am not defending this guy, if you look at my other posts, he doesn’t even know the nutritional value of a carrot.
LOL, the frat boy is defending the nutritionist. His creditability is zero, while yours is less than zero
You…can’t cure diabetes. What are you talking about? It’s not indigestion or a sinus infection. A vegan diet is rather unhealthy (and unnatural, we’re currently omnivores), and will not…cure anything. [Except maybe a meat/dairy/gluten allergy. And that's still not a cure.]
research points to the importance of vegan diet to cure disease and you praise atkins. Go **** yourself
Actually, normal blood sugar range is different for each person. for example, mine is 80-110. Your endo can tell you the right levels.
Actually, I did google it before I commented, so I could confirm what I already knew: they have 1 carb, which is nominal. Cheese even has 1 carb, and no one considers cheese a carb food. So in practice, they are a carb-free. I do not find the GI very reliable, but since you brought it up, carrots rank as a “low GI” food. So I don’t know where you’re getting all this.
Completely incorrect. Carrots are very high on the glycemic index…containing quite a bit of fructose. Just Google “carbs carrots” and you will see.
There are no carbs in carrots, sorry. Like celery, they are an “empty” food. Peas, corn, potatoes, apples – these have carbs. Not carrots.
And bye the way, given its hard to digest fast. Trust me, it makes you feel like **** and gives you massive anexity. Aside from from the difficulty the kidneys handeling proteen.
Um… Do you know what it’s like to have diabetic kidneys?
of intolerance. I eat salads, make my own dressing (stay away from neurotoxic sugar subs, Stevia is working, yuck). My diabetes was only dx’d because I insisted on the 2 hr glucose fast. Anyway, I would like to save my gallbladder, since I don’t believe it is an “unessential” organ. There are A LOT of scams out there. One outfit wants $89 for suppositories they claim will dissolve bile sludge and stones. What do you recommend? I think I am seriously backed up with bile into other organs.
OK, Asktheholisticdoctor, what to do if you have been diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, then a month or so later, Dx’d with diabetes (not pre-diabetes, but in the lower diabetic 2glucose numbers) and THEN start having gallstone pain, get an ultrasound and whammo, “they” want to take your gall bladder out? I feel like I’ve been hit by a Mac truck! I am not obese but am overweight with that infamous belly fat, apple shape. I have already been staying away from gluten because
You can eat anything you want….it’s the total amount of carbs you eat each day that matters….but eating anything sweet quickly raises your carb total and limits the amount of good carbs you can have. Try using chewable Vitamin C tablets as candy when you have a craving.
Congrats! You are a perfect example of what I’m saying.
To albatross234 .. drop the diet cola drink green tea … cut down on the pasta if you do snack use protein snacks … not ones that have carbs… get exercise and monitor your sugar… I am watching my sugar and its nearly normal… and I have lost 30 lbs in the last 2 months and down from a size 48 expando pants to a size 44.
I am feeling better and drink water to flush out the toxins… Hope this helps you… my wife runs a nutrition business. and is willing to help.
Is there any kind of sweet stuff
you CAN eat on a low carb low glucose diet?
Wow so I’m not crazy! I’ve been going nuts doing my best to eat mostly veggies and protein. But not matter what I’ve done besides feeling sick to my stomach my BS have been sky high. Your the first person that has said watch out for the veggies too. Everyone else kept pushing veggies at me. And when I went to see the doctor he told me just face it your fat and sent me home. He was no help at all.
72 yo, 20 lbs o/w, with 160-189 daily fasting, and 8.5 (test iv 2 mos.)
I live alone, and depend on frozen entrees (contain mostly pasta choices) for dinner, but I snack a lot too. I usually have a couple of poached eggs and 2 toast daily. I usually drink diet cola, but what should I drink instead? I’m tired.
