Anna asked:
I asked my dad if he has type 1 or 2. He said 1. However , he said he wasn’t born with it and only takes medication, and does not need insulin. Isn’t that type 2 diabetes? Also, how long does it take for diabetes to develop? He got it AFTER I was born, so how could I inherit it if he got it after I was born. I don’t think I’ll ever inherit it.He said he is below 300, I don’t know what that means.
He’ s not near 300. Also he got it when he was like 38 years old.
I don’t get how I can inherit it if hegot it after I was born.

i don’t know
it is rare but your dad most likely knows wat he
u couldn’t inherit it
He could have type 1 anyway.
this site is helpful
Yes, he has type 2. (adult onset)
It could run in your family. Just take care of yourself. You’ll be fine.
Type one usually presents itself before age 16.
Below 300 means his blood sugar level is that. Still high…. even with meds… should be between 90-120
you always have a chance to inherit diabetes. no matter how old you are. my dad got it when he was 35. and i know i have a very high risk to get it too.
most people that are born with it are type 1. but there are some cases where people get type 1 way after they are born.
if his blood sugar level is anywhere near 300…his diabetes is not under control!!!
a normal blood sugar is around 80-120 ish. so if his is higher than that, he really needs to get that checked out.
You can get inheritable diseases the second you are conceived. The disease is printed into your DNA.
You’re right. That is type II. Type I diabetics have a fully disabled Pancreas and need the insulin to survive, if he’s taking meds like Glucophage/Metformin that increases insulin sensitivity, then that means his pancreas is still somewhat functioning.
If diabetes runs in the family you can be at risk for it. But as long as you eat healthy, stay away from excessive amounts of carbs, and get good exercise, you may never have to deal with it. Or if you do wind up getting it, you’ll be in good shape. People are typically born with Type I. Type II is developed over time and into adulthood. (That’s why it’s called Adult Onset Type II Diabetes). You more than likely have the gene already in you, whether you know it or not. So it’s important that know knowing it’s in your family to check with your doctor every once in a while.
As for being below 300, that means his blood sugar levels are below 300mg/dl which is still very high and not in control. The average person, and the aim of a diabetic is to keep their blood sugars within the 80-120mg/dl range, and maybe at most 150 or so after eating.
that sounds like what my dad has, which is type 2. that is usually related to poor diet and exercise habits. as long as you eat right and exercise regularly, you will be fine. my dad started eating right and walking after he was diagnosed with it, and now it rarely bothers him. you just have to take care of your body. 300 is the blood sugar level, the normal range is between 110 and 140
Hi. I extensively provided information to another asker over the weekend. It answers many of your questions, and also provides an alternative perspective. Here’s the link:

Mine is the longest answer, and starts out: I’ll assume you are talking about diabetes mellitus.
It’s now in voting, so if for some reason the link doesn’t get you to where you want to go, you can Search for questions with:
Which means is ideal for diabetes patients, allopathy, ayurveda, homeopathy, or others?
There’s a lot your dad can do to turn things around, and preventatively for you. Take care.
Type 1 Diabetes is also known as ‘Insulin Dependant Diabetes’. There is a problem with the insulin release from the pancreas and insulin must be administered to overcome this. It can sometimes be referred to as Juvenile diabetes because it is diagnosed before the age of 40.
Type 2 Diabetes is related to obesity but you don’t need to be obese for it to develop. There is insulin resistance of the cells that normally uptake insulin so insulin that is in the blood does not bind to the cells which means they cannot uptake glucose as they normally would and blood sugar levels remain high. This can be treated by altering the diet and taking some medications for diabetes, sometimes insulin therapy is also given to decrease insulin resistance. This type of diabetes is more likely to develop after the age of 40 but these days with obesity increasing it is also seen in younger patients.
The second type of diabetes is more hereditary, but the first type can also be hereditary. With the appropriate management patients can lead very normal lifes, it is only when adherence to treatment fails that severe consequences can occur.
It sounds to me like your dad has the second type of diabetes because he does not need to take insulin. It can take any period of time to develop and environmental factors can play a massive role. Look out for signs like increased thirst and the need to urinate more frequently than usual. You can buy a home urine dipstick glucose testing kit if you are concerned about developing it.
If your dad is diabetic and does not need insulin he is type 2.
You ask how you could develop it….It’s because the gene may have been passed on to you.
How long does it take to develop, it varies from person to person but eating poorly, leading a sedentary life style and obesity are the triggering factors that will cause a persons body to develop into type 2 diabetes.
Your dad said he is below 300 if he’s referring to his blood sugars he needs better and more aggressive treatment than he’s getting right now.
But let me say that a lot of type 2 diabetics are now taking insulin, not to sustain life but to get their blood sugars more in control, type1 diabetics need it to sustain life.
The process responsible for type 1 diabetes is destruction of insulin-secreting pancreatic islet cells.
The underlying defect that causes type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance. People with type 2 diabetes have an underlying genetic predisposition towards insulin resistance.
Here is a great guide you can offer your father
Thanks
