WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes accounts for an enormous public health and social burden. Insulin is a substance that is necessary to breakdown our sugar intake into small particles to be utilised by our body to produce fuel and energy for our day to day activities. Either the body does not manufacture enough insulin or the cells pay no attention to the insulin. Eventually, the pancreas can wear out from working overtime to produce extra insulin and may no longer be able to produce enough to keep a persons blood sugar levels within a normal range. Of course nobody wants to suffer from the painful results of diabetes. As the diabetes epidemic spreads around the world, the government and other healthcare providers are initiating efforts to invest in health education, diagnosis and treatments for this chronic, unbearable – but controllable – disorder.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

Also known as adult-onset diabetes, type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. Excessive use of sugar has been known to increase incidences of type 2 diabetes and obesity. If our bodies do not produce insulin, this will result in a lower amount of sugar in our blood and in our urine, so once we have a severe low amount of glucose in our blood, other internal organs like eyes, kidneys, heart and nerves might not have enough supply of sugar. Nerve damage can cause your hands and feet to hurt, tingle or feel numb. Gum disease and loss of teeth can also be a result of improper diabetes treatment. Pregnant women are at risk as they enter their second and third trimesters. More hormones are secreted during pregnancy as the body demands more insulin, making it more difficult for the insulin to help their cells absorb the glucose.

SYMPTOMS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES

Many diabetics will only be diagnosed once presenting some, but not necessarily all, of the following symptoms:

- An increase in frequency of *********
- Constant or excessive thirst
- Blurred vision
- Itchy skin and/or regular yeast infections like candida/thrush
- Unexplained weight loss or gain

Your GP will probably want to arrange for a glucose fasting test to determine if you have diabetes. Once armed with the test results you can start to make informed decisions about the best treatment plan for you. If you have type 2 diabetes try increasing physical activity, follow an appropriate diet and maintain your ideal weight as a preliminary treatment.

DIABETES TREATMENT

Educating yourself on how to care for your diabetes will help you feel better today and in the future. A healthcare team may help you take care of your diabetes as well as your doctor, dentist, endocrinologist, dieticians, friends and family. There is no one particular cure or medicine which has been invented to resolve diabetes, but there are lots of treatments to control and handle its harmful effects on the body with the major goal of treating and minimizing any elevation of blood sugar without causing abnormally low levels of blood sugar. It will require self discipline to make your diabetes care plan work. If necessary, quit smoking and curb any excessive intake of alcohol. If diet and exercise aren’t enough or fail to control your elevated blood sugar, you may need diabetic medications or insulin therapy to manage your blood sugar.

ALTERNATIVE DIABETES CURES

Although a diabetes diagnosis could mean long-term medication there are other alternative diabetes treatments that could help you. Studies have proven that certain supplements may enhance our immune system and lessen the damage the disease could cause. Promising supplements include chromium, magnesium, glucomannan and evening primrose oil. In order to start an alternative regimen, a naturopath needs to look into your medical history and look for some factors such as, physical, mental, psychological and emotional symptoms of a person.

You may also want to consider using a Homeopath so ask around amongst your friends for recommendations. Herbal remedies will not only work to control blood sugar levels but will also work with your eyes, liver, kidney and heart functions as well. Whichever course of action you take you will have to be well aware of the foods you eat and enjoy outdoor physical activities to strengthen your immune system and better manage your diabetes.
