Coffee is definitely not a problem for diabetics.
Coffee, tea, etc are fine without sugar. They are also fine with an artificial sweetener. Warning though, and I am sure your friend knows this: consuming too many caffinated beverages can cause your sugar levels to go low. So drink in moderation.
