Question by Your M: Can my brother in law join the army if he has type 1 diabetes?
I’m in the army reserve and my brother in law wants to join. I’m wondering if he would be able to get a waver for his type 1 diabetes. He’s in college right now and he wants to know if he can join through an officer ROTC program if he doesn’t get approved in MEPs.

NOPE…
They denied me re-enlistment last year due to adult onset type2 diabetes, so I doubt it. (Sucks, I know.)
No
Absolutely not ! The Pentagon does not deliberatly take on the role of care taker, at least not knowingly! Diabetes is a deal breaker !
Diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. The source below is the medical standard.
