Peppermint asked:
Hi, I have been diagnosed with hereditary hypoglycemia for a while now. I inherited it from my father’s side of the family, but I am now curious if I can also develop diabetes from my mother’s. My maternal grandpa and uncle from my mother’s side of the family have both developed diabetes in their 50′s. So, I am wondering if I can also develop diabetes when I am already hypoglycemic?

The most common reason for reactive hypoglycemia is when someone is on the way to becoming diabetic. Their tissues are resistant to insulin, but then sometimes are a little less resistant and wind up pulling too much sugar out of the blood.
Do you have a good diagnosis with a 5-hour glucose tolerance test? Even if you do, I have found it remarkably helpful to have a home glucose monitor. Drug stores sell good ones for under $100. On sale they even get down to $20, since the manufacturer makes their profit on the test strips, not so much the monitor.
I’ve been surprised how when I’ve been unusually hungry, even shaky as well, my glucose has been just fine, around 90. I think anyone who thinks they are hypoglycemic would benefit from checking this to see how much of their symptoms really relate to blood sugar.
