My doctor thinks I could have diabetes and is doing blood work next week. My Dad and my maternal grandpa both have diabetes. I’ve heard you can control it with diet. Can you reverse it with diet, or is the genetic disposition overwhelming?

It can be reversed with diet in certain cases but not all. Your Dr will inform you of the choices you have …..diet/exercise vs. meds.
sometimes.. depends what type of diabetes, type 1 or 2.
it can definitely be prevented by having the right diet
People with pre-diabetes usually go on to develop type 2 diabetes. But it is possible to reverse pre-diabetes and prevent a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes later on. My mom had pre onset diabetes and I took some classes at our local hospital about diabetes and what to eat. She has no signs now of the diabetes but we still moniter her gluclose levels everyday. Do what your doctor tells you to do and educate yourself on what to eat and when and you will be fine. Good luck at the doctors office.
if by “reversed” you mean cured — no. Diabetes has no cure, other than a pancreas transplant. But the after-effects of transplants (organ rejection adn anti-rejectiond rugs) is often worse than the diabetes!
If “reversed” you mean “controlled”, and the effects of diabetes reduced or eliminated — YES!
Once you have diabetes you will always have it. You can NOT “get rid of it”, except through surgery (transplant).
But you can CONTROL it. Most doctors try controlling it through diet and exercise, but the sad truth is that very, very few people have the self-discipline to do so.
So most diabetics need oral medications. But still, you MUST control your diet, get more exercise, and lose weight or the medicines don’t do any good.
And when THAT happens, you must either take insulin shots, or you will die. There are NO insulin pills! Shots are the ONLY method of getting insulin.
And even with insulin you MUST control your diet!
Dietary control is simple, but difficult. You must eat NO sugars – soda pop, sports drinks, energy drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream. You must REDUCE starches — breads , crackers, rice, pastas, potatoes (especially french fries!). You must get MORE fibers — green vegetables and whole grain foods. You must get MORE EXERCISE, and lose weight.
The only way to CONTROL diabetes is through lifestyle changes. You must change your diet, you must get more exercise.
IF you change your lifestyle, a diabetic person can live as long and as happy as anyone else.
If you do NOT change your lifestyle, the diabetic faces high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strokes, heart attacks, blindness, kidney disease, dialysis, amputation of the hands, arms, feet, or legs, sexual performance problems, and eventually a painful death.
A very aggressive treatment approach is best. Those blood sugars have to come down NOW. So a treatment of oral medications AND insulin is best, and as the patient learns to control their lifestyle the insulin can be reduced or eliminated, and possibly the oral medications, too.
It has been shown in one study that a low fat, vegan diet has been able to “reverse” the symptoms of type 2 Diabetes. Two groups were taken, one was assigned the American Diabetes Assoc. diet and the other was assigned an unrefined, vegan diet. The vegan dieters had significant results when compared to even those on the ADA diet plan.
