How Do You Take Care of Type 1 Diabetes?

type 1 diabetes

A question from Beth: How do you take care of type 1 diabetes?
I want to know how to take care of type 1 diabetes, when do you check? How often? What is a good eating plan? When can you eat and not eat? When can you have candy and sugar or go off your eating plan? When do you take insulin? How much insulin? Just all the stuff you have to go through to take care of type 1 diabetes, thanks!

Type 1 diabetes must be treated with insulin. Both basal and bolus insulin must be used. Only analog insulin is appropriate for use at this time. Basal analog insulin includes detemir (Levemir) and glargine (Lantus). Bolus analog insulin includes aspart (NovoLog), lispro (Humalog), and glulisine (Apidra). Bolus insulin is injected once or twice daily and the dosage should be re-evaluated every 3 to 5 days based upon your fasting and bedtime glucose readings. You must take your glucose prior to each meal and adjust the dosage of the bolus insulin based upon the pre-meal glucose and the carbohydrate load of the meal about to be consumed. This latter point helps to identify your question about diet. In a sense the type 1 diabetic does not need to be as careful with carbohydrates as the type 2 diabetic as the type 1 diabetic is going to adjust their bolus insulin dosage based in part upon the carbohydrate load of the meal about to be consumed. Although this is true most physicians would nonetheless prefer the type 1 diabetic to be on a low glycemic index diet with a significant restriction in the amount of refined carbohydrates (‘sweets’) consumed. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

As C. Kurt Alexander, MD, CDE, FACP, FACE of Muncie, IN might tell you, type II diabetes is the more common of the two types of diabetes in existence. With this type, which about ninety percent of all people who suffer from diabetes have, the diabetic does not need insulin and has a host of different symptoms. Some symptoms might include sexual impotence, abnormal thirst, abnormal hunger, slow healing of wounds, numbness, increased urination and blurred vision.

Non-insulin dependent diabetes generally affects adults, and does so for a variety of reasons. These reasons include genetics, obesity, and many other elements. There are many different diabetic cures for Type II diabetes that a person who is diabetic should consider.

Exercise and Diet

One of the better methods to help control your Type II diabetes is to eat the right foods and maintain a good cross training program. Maintaining the right weight for your height is crucial to control your diabetes. Being obese is one thing that will make your diabetes worse and implementing and maintaining a balanced diet is a great way to make medication unnecessary and can sometimes halt diabetes altogether. You will want to start a diet that is not only healthy, but also one that will help your body deal with the insulin and how it is used.

Exercise plans not only helps you diminish your weight, but also helps you use insulin properly.

Medication

Medication is required when exercise and dieting is not helping to lower the sugar levels within your serum. On the other hand, if you fail to start any type of exercise program and good diet into your daily life, you will have to take prescription medication. There are many different types of medication that your doctor may prescribe. For example, oral medications such as Meglitinides, Thiazolidinediones, Biguanides, Alpha-Glucosidase, and Sulfonylureas are common elements in medications.

However, if your oral medications do not work or you have some sort of reaction to them, your doctor will likely prescribe possibly several types of insulin instead. The majority of people choose to try to control their diabetes in other ways, without the use of injections or other medication.

Natural Remedies

There are numerous natural treatments that may be useful, these remedies include home remedies, as well as herbal supplements and vitamins. Before you choose to treat your Type II diabetes with natural remedies, you must make sure that you research all options and make the right choice with your doctor.

Finding diabetic cures and choosing the right treatment of Type II diabetes means understanding all options and alternatives available to you and picking the that sounds right and is most effective for your diabetes.
