Question by rxbndt2003: How does a person get diagnosed with diabetes?
Obviously a person needs to go to the doctor, but what kind of tests or procedures do they do to test you and diagnose a person with diabetes or low blood sugar? Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by NAN
Just a blood test. They do a fasting blood sugar which tells what your blood sugar is after you haven’t eaten anything for 12 hours.
Or they can do a blood test 2 hours after you eat which tells how your body is handling the food.
There is also a blood test they do that can tell what your blood sugar has been averaging for the last 3 monthes.
So there are lots of tests, they all require a blood test.

FoodForLifeTV asked:
On this week’s episode of Food for Life TV, Dr. Barnard gives an overview of how insulin is made. He also explains that type 1 diabetes is caused when the body produces no insulin. Research shows that this may occur when antibodies in your body fight off proteins found in cows milk. Dr. Barnard also outlines how people already diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can cut down on diabetes complications by eating foods that are vegan, low in fat, and have a low gylcemic index.

I am 17 and especially at night (like after dinner) I get really thirsty… I seriously have to chew gum to get rid of the thirsty feeling in my mouth. I also have been ****** slightly more then usual, maybe 1 or 2x a day more then usual. I haven’t lost any weight though (and I know that is a major symptom of diabetes…)

Question by rahrah: Is there a way to lower my risk of getting type 1 diabetes?
I know it’s not necessarily hereditary, but my grandma has type 1 diabetes. I’m 17 and know I could still potentially get it in the next few years. I eat pretty healthy and exercise at least an hour a day.

Answer by sonj
Ignore the above two answers. They are fools.
Diabetes type 1 is an autoimmune disease.
That means nothing can prevent it unfortunately.
Type 2 can be prevented by healthy eating and exercise
Yes you can get type 1 into your forties but not much older usually. Many newly diagnosed type 1′s are in their teens. No you are not born with.
You are born with a high likelyhood of getting it

Question by lillymadrid: How soon can gestational diabetes be detected in pregnancy?
I am barely 6 weeks pregnant and had a blood glucose test done last week, the results came back high at 220. Does anyone know if that is too early for gestational diabetes, or do you think I had diabetes before the pregnancy and just didn’t know about it?
The reason they tested so early is because my younger sister has diabetes; however, it’s juvenile diabetes (Type 1). This is my first pregnancy, so I’ve never had the problem before.
Best answer:
Answer by Pedsgurl
Is there a reason they tested you early? Normally they don’t test for gestational diabetes until after 24 weeks, which makes me think that’s when it’s most commonly found. I would think that , at 6 weeks pregnant, you had issues with this before. It’s an excellent question for the doctor.
Good luck and congrats!
